Van Collides with Streetcar in Downtown Portland – One Injury, Streetcar Derailed

On Thursday August 28, 2014, at 6:10 p.m., Central Precinct officers responded to West Burnside Street and 10th Avenue on the report that a van crashed into the Portland Streetcar.

Officers arrived and learned that the driver of the van was traveling eastbound on Burnside Street, approaching 10th Avenue, when he apparently had some kind of a brake failure in his vehicle. The driver shouted to people in the crosswalk to get out of the way (which they did) but he was unable to stop before colliding with a northbound Streetcar.

The driver was not injured. One passenger on the Streetcar claimed to be injured and was transported to a Portland hospital for treatment.

No citations were issued as a result of this investigation and the van was towed from the scene.

Traffic on West Burnside Street is down to one lane in each direction as officers standby for a crane to arrive to lift the Streetcar back onto the tracks. This traffic delay is expected for up to 3 more hours.
