Somali families join Portland Police in GREAT Program

On Wednesday October 23, the Portland Police Bureau GREAT Program hosted a graduation involving local Somali families. The families have been working with Officer Angel Ocasio and community members as part of the GREAT Families program.

The celebration was held at the Hacienda CDC Salon Comunal, 6856 NE Killingsworth St.

GREAT stands for Gang Resistance Education And Training. The GREAT Program is a school-based, law enforcement officer-instructed classroom curriculum. With prevention as its primary objective, the program is intended as an immunization against delinquency, youth violence, and gang membership.

The GREAT Families program is a research-based, family-strengthening program consisting of a six-session family curriculum and a family/community resource guide. By linking a practical curriculum to a process of engaging local family assistance resources, GREAT Families provides GREAT instructors with the basic tools needed to work effectively with families and with other family-serving organizations in their community.
